Issues on art and the environment, contemporary mass media, marketing, visual culture, fine art, museum education, and traditional folk art imagery will be examined.

Students will create visual and literary journals that focus on an area of interest that lead to cross cultural understanding through artistic production, creative writing, visual analysis, critical review, historical comparisons, and other approaches that are appropriate to the research sites and scope of the program.

Required Supplies

One field notebook, one black artist blank book, one large folder envelope for visual artifacts, pencils, markers, watercolors and brushes, pens, glue sticks, scissors, (suggested) digital camera.

See Assignments and Grading Information below.

General Grading Structure

Grading is based upon a point system. Each assignment is given a point value. At the end of the session, grades will be made based on the points collected. Assignments must be handed in on time and care should be taken to have assignments in a presentable format.

The visual-literary journal is a tool to become a better artist, to be more creative, to explore ideas and to find enjoyment in the visual arts as a creative student. Visual journals will serve as an idea diary and a place to process information and thoughts both visually and written). Students will use their journals to collect information, record ideas, and reflect on their international experiences. The visual journal will become a way for students to express themselves through images and words.

Visual Journal Entries: This document includes outdoor sketches, gallery sketches, artifact collage, and artistic documentation of experiences. Visual journaling is an artistic process of reflective thinking and is an expressive tool for image making and understanding.

Literary Journal /Creative Writing Entries: Creative writing assignments will touch on matters of place, travel, identity, personal history, as well as culture, art, literature, local color and observations. The writing assignments include poetry, critical essay, short stories, and descriptive writing.

Students will explore a variety of artistic styles, media, practices, artistic traditions and innovations in Scandinavian art that reflects the culturally specific goal of art for all. Students will create a visual journal that reflects cultural understanding through artistic production, creative writing, visual analysis and critical review with an individualized focus in Nordic art, art education, design, and/or art history. Students will research and present one topic of their choosing.
